Wicker is a popular form of outdoor furniture. But, “Wicker” can mean a lot of things in the world of furniture. The term “Wicker” refers not to the material being used, but to the method of weaving any one of a variety of materials.
For our purposes, we will be classifying wicker as material that is used on those pieces of furniture that are “TOTALLY” woven with twigs or vines. Most wicker is woven with materials that include rattan, bamboo, willow, reeds, papyrus and rush to name a few. The materials listed are typically organic materials that are used either green or dried and then processed for weaving.
A typical wicker piece is shown in the pictures below. This piece is made up of a solid wood or rattan frame with the woven or wicker material wrapped and woven around the piece for durability, support and appearance.
